Michael Jackson Week helps 'The X Factor' U.S. become No. 1 TV show of the night

For the first time, "The X Factor" U.S. was the No. 1 U.S. TV show of the night in total viewers, for the episode that Fox televised in the U.S. on November 30, 2011. The ratings victory was no doubt helped by the episode's "Michael Jackson Week" theme in which the Top 7 finalists did songs originally performed by Michael Jackson when he was a solo artist or when he was a member of the Jackson 5/The Jacksons.

Members of the Jackson family (Michael's mother, Michael's three children and three of his brothers) attended the show and were prominently featured in the telecast.

(Click here for a recap of the episode.)

According to overnight ratings provided by Nielsen Media Research, the 90-minute episode had 10.93 million U.S. viewers, narrowly surpassing CBS's "Survivor," which came in second place with 10.92 million U.S. viewers. The final ratings may have slight adjustments to these numbers.

[UPDATE: The final ratings are now official, and "The X Factor" U.S. got 11.05 million U.S. viewers for this episode. "Survivor" also had 11.05 million viewers, but "The X Factor" was ranked higher since "The X Factor" was tops with 18-to-49-year-olds (3.7 rating/10 share, compared to Survivor," which got a 3.1 rating/9 share with 18-to-49-year-olds. NBC's "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" was in third place for the night, with 9.9 million U.S. viewers.]

ABC's "Modern Family" and CBS's "Criminal Minds," which are usually No. 1 and No. 2 in the U.S. on Wednesday nights, had repeat episodes this week and therefore hovered in the middle of the rankings, with about 7 million U.S. viewers each for "Modern Family" and "Criminal Minds." When these two shows have new episodes, they usually have higher ratings than the competition.

"The X Factor" U.S. is usually the No. 3-rated prime-time network show of the night every time it airs in the U.S., although the show is often No. 1 among 18-to-49-year-olds, which is the most coveted demographic for advertisers.

The highest-rated "X Factor" U.S. episodes so far have been the show's first two episodes (which Fox televised on September 21 and September 22, 2011), which got 12.5 million U.S. viewers each.

The lowest-rated "X Factor" U.S. episode to far was the episode that aired on November 23, 2011 (Thanksgiving Week), which got 8.5 million U.S. viewers.
